After moulting our hens haven't restarted laying and it's been quite a while now. The production of feathers after the moult puts extra demands on their bodies, they cease laying as feather production is more of a necessity than egg production. Normally, this spontaneously restarts but ours hasn't. I really don't want to buy supermarket eggs as even the free range eggs look weirdly uniform. So I need to stimulate their laying. I don't want to go down the artificial lighting route as that seems a little too intense for our girls. After a little research it seems that a little extra protein in the form of cat food (very high in protein) might be enough to give them a boost. Cat food for the chooks starts tomorrow...... |
