The girls are laying

After a few days of dry cat food crumbled in with their feed the girls are laying again.  Not sure if it's a coincidence but next year I will be giving them cat food immediately following the moult.

Cat food for the chickens

After moulting our hens haven't restarted laying and it's been quite a while now.  The production of feathers after the moult puts extra demands on their bodies, they cease laying as feather production is more of a necessity than egg production.  Normally, this spontaneously restarts but ours hasn't.  I really don't want to buy supermarket eggs as even the free range eggs look weirdly uniform.  So I need to stimulate their laying.  I don't want to go down the artificial lighting route as that seems a little too intense for our girls.

Adding to our little flock.

We have just added 2 new hens to our little group of Warrens.  We got a Light Sussex pullet and a Silver Sussex pullet.  They have been named Colin and Tiny by the children!  They are beatiful, happy and healthy girls.
We got them from a small holding couple in Skipton (featherspoultry.co.uk).  The couple were lovely, clearly very fond of their hens and incredibly knowledgeable, not to mention patient with me and my two boys.
The chooks seem to be settling in nicely with the other 3 (Dimples, Mellow and Freaky Beaky).
